TEXT 6 -THANKSGIVING

TEXT 6-THANKSGIVING-

Thanksgiving

• Thanksgiving is a holiday that is celebrated in the United States and in Canada.
• Thanksgiving was the first holiday celebrated in America.
• It is a federal holiday. That means that schools, banks, post offices, and government offices are closed.
• Each year, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November.
• Thanksgiving 2009 is on Thursday, November 26

History of Thanksgiving
The pilgrims were a small group of people who travelled to North America to start a new life. They wanted religious freedom. They started the first colony in America.
When the pilgrims arrived in America it was the middle of winter and it was very difficult for them. After the journey across the ocean, many people were sick and died of disease or malnutrition.
The Native Americans lived in America before the pilgrims arrived. In the spring, the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims. They gave the Pilgrims corn and helped them plant it. They taught the colonists how to grow other crops, and how to hunt and fish. In autumn of 1621 they had a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest.

How Americans celebrate Thanksgiving today:
Today, Thanksgiving is a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans.
On Thanksgiving Americans watch the Parade in New York City and play football.
We have a big meal like the Pilgrims had.

Typical Thanksgiving Menu:
Dinner:
Turkey
Stuffing
Cranberry Sauce
Sweet Potatoes

TEXT 2- EVERYDAY CLOTHES

Everyday Clothes

I have two teenage children who love shopping for clothes. They go to the mall with their friends every Saturday.

On school days, my son, Stan, likes to wear blue jeans and T-shirts. He only wears a suit on formal occassions like weddings or funerals. He feels comfortable wearing a jacket but not a tie. My daughter, Lily, likes to wear tight pants. She wears a dress or a skirt and blouse for parties or dinners. She doesn't feel comfortable in high heeled shoes and loves wearing casual and sporty clothes. When Lily visited her aunt in Texas, she bought cowboy boots, tight blue jeans and a cowboy hat.

In Winter, my children wear coats, hats and gloves on cold days. When they go skiing, they put on toques and mittens. Mittens are warmer than gloves. My son doesn't like rainy days because he has to wear a raincoat and carry an umbrella. My daughter loves to wear the scarf that I bought for her Birthday.

In the summer, Lily and Stan usually wear shorts, tanktops and sandals to the beach. Sometimes on weekends, we go walking in the mountains so they wear hiking boots and thick woolen socks to protect their feet and toes.

Last Saturday, my children came home with a bag of clothes each. My son bought two sweaters, and a pair of leather shoes. My daughter bought a black belt to wear with her blue dress, a pair of grey pants and a matching jacket. She also bought a green blouse.

My children have no problem spending money. They think money grows on trees!

LYRICS: COLDPLAY, FIX YOU

When you try your best,

but you don't succeed
When you get what you want,

but not what you need
When you feel so tired,

but you can't sleep
(you´re) stuck in reverse

And the tears

come streaming down your face
When you lose something

you can't replace
When you love someone,

but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love

to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something

you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn

from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

re

Cuando lo intentas todo

pero no tienes éxito,

Cuando consigues lo que quieres

pero no lo que necesitas,

Cuando te sientes tan cansado

pero no puedes dormir,

(estás) estancado [atascado en marcha atrás]

Y las lágrimas

caen por tu rostro,

cuando pierdes algo

que no puedes reemplazar,

Cuando amas a alguien

pero se desperdicia,

¿Podría ser peor?

Las luces te guiarán a casa

Y encenderán tus huesos.

Y yo intentaré arreglarte.

Bien arriba o bien abajo

Y yo...

Las lágrimas caen por tu rostro.

Te prometo que aprenderé

de mis errores.

Las lágrimas caen por tu rostro

Y yo...

Las luces te guiarán a casa

Y encenderán tus huesos.

TEXT 8: MICHAEL JACKSON: BIOGRAPHY

Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, on August 29, 1958. He had 8 brothers and sisters.
When he was a young boy, the family lived in a very small house in Gary, a small industrial town south east of Chicago. His father was a guitarist in a band called The Falcons and worked in a steel factory, while his wife brought up the children.
In 1964 he formed a band with his brothers, called The Jackson Five. Michael became the lead singer of the band and danced like James Brown. They became popular very quickly, and performed in more and more concerts. Then, they had an audition with the Motown, and soon recorded their first record. A few years later, they separated and Michael started a solo career.
On December 1, 1982, his first solo album Thriller was released and was an immediate success.
‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Beat it’ became huge hits all over the world.
In all he recorded 12 solo albums, and tried different types of music: pop, funk, R&B, soul.
His great dancing capacities also made him very popular. He was the one who invented the moonwalk, which many people then tried to imitate.
He got married twice (the first time in 1994 to Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa-Marie), and had 3 children.
During his life, his physical appearance changed a lot, making him look progressively more like a white man.
On June 25, 2009 Michael Jackson was found dead in his house in Los Angeles, and millions of people over the world cried and shared their emotion in different kinds of meetings.
