History of Thanksgiving
The pilgrims were a small group of people who travelled to North America to start a new life. They wanted religious freedom. They started the first colony in America.
When the pilgrims arrived in America it was the middle of winter and it was very difficult for them. After the journey across the ocean, many people were sick and died of disease or malnutrition.
The Native Americans lived in America before the pilgrims arrived. In the spring, the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims. They gave the Pilgrims corn and helped them plant it. They taught the colonists how to grow other crops, and how to hunt and fish. In autumn of 1621 they had a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest.

How Americans celebrate Thanksgiving today:
Today, Thanksgiving is a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans.
On Thanksgiving Americans watch the Parade in New York City and play football.
We have a big meal like the Pilgrims had.
