2011 World Economic Situation: Report launched by the UN

The UN expects that the world economy will expand by 3.1 per cent in 2011 and 3.5 per cent in 2012 – far from sufficient to enable recovering the jobs lost because of the crisis.

The growth prospects for Europe and Japan are even worst, the report says. Gross Domestic Product growth in the Euro area will probably stagnate at 1.3 per cent in 2011 and 1.7 per cent in 2012. Growth in 2010 was 1.6 per cent.

Some countries in Europe will see even less growth, especially where drastic fiscal austerity and continued high unemployment rates are debilitating domestic demand. This is especially the case in Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, with high government debt rates. Their economies will remain in recession or stagnate in the near term.

10 Worldwide, unemployment and underemployment rates are very high among young people (aged 15 to 24).

High unemployment will constrain household consumption recovery, and this will affect output growth.

The global economy still needs to create at least another 22 million new jobs in order to return to the pre-crisis level of global employment. At the current speed of the recovery, 16 this would take at least five years to achieve.

Hawking says humans must go into space

The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

The British astrophysicist told a news conference in Hong Kong that humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who arrived to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture planned for Thursday were sold out.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

The 64-year-old scientist — author of the global best seller "A Brief History of Time" — is in a wheelchair and communicates with the help of a computer because he suffers from a neurological disorder called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

World's oldest person dies at 115

Maria de Jesus was 115 years and 114 days old when she died.

A Portuguese woman who held the title of oldest living person for just five weeks has died at the age of 115.

Maria de Jesus died on 2 January, 2009. One of her six children told a Portugal news agency that her mother never "fell ill, nor took any medication".

Mrs de Jesus had topped the table of people aged 110 or older collated by the Gerontology Research Group after Edna Parker died on 26 November, 2008. American Gertrude Baines, born 6 April, 1894, is now the oldest living person. According to AFP news agency, Mrs De Jesus was born in central Portugal. She started working in agriculture at the age of 12 and never went to school. She could not read or write.

Australians happiest people in the world

Australians are the happiest people in the world. This is according to a new survey from the market research company GfK NOP. Interviewers asked 30,000 people in 30 different countries about their levels of happiness. Forty-six percent of Australians said they were “very happy”. Following them was the USA (40 percent), Egypt (36 percent), India (34 percent) and the UK and Canada (32 percent). Hungary finished top of the “miserable” list. Thirty-five percent of its citizens said they were “very unhappy”. Second most miserable were Russians, at 30 percent.

The research showed that money and age affected how happy people are. The study did not show that money can buy happiness, but it did reveal a link between a lack of money and unhappiness. Unhappier people were in lower income groups or unemployed. The study also suggested the older we become, the less happy we are. Globally, teenagers are the happiest people. The least happy age group is 50-59 – only 16 percent of those in their fifties said they were very happy. The things that make us happy include good health, financial security and a happy marriage, not cars and clothes.

TEXT 6- SUPERSIZE ME-

1             Everything's bigger in America,  we've got the biggest cars, the biggest houses,
the biggest companies, the biggest food, and, finally, the biggest people.

America has now become the fattest nation in the world.
Congratulations.

5             Nearly 100 million Americans are today either overweight or obese. That's

more  than 60% of all U.S. adults.

Since 1980 the total number of overweight and obese Americans has doubled,
with twice as many overweight children and three times as many overweight
              adolescents.

10          The fattest state in America? Mississippi -- where one in four people are obese.

I grew up in West Virginia, currently the third-fattest state in America. When I was growing up, my mother cooked dinner every single day. Almost all my memories of her are in the kitchen. And we never ate out, only on those few, rare special occasions. Today, families do it all the time, and they're paying for it --not
15          only with their wallets, but with their waistlines.

Obesity is now second only to smoking as a major cause of preventable death in America, with more than 400.000 deaths per year associated with related illnesses.

Each day, one in four Americans visits a fast-food restaurant. And this hunger
20           for fast food isn't just in America. It's happening on a global basis.
McDonald's alone operates more than 30.000 stores in over 100 countries on 6 continents and feeds more than  46  million people worldwide every day. That's more than the entire population of Spain. They're everywhere --walmarts, airports, rest stops, gas stations, train station, shopping malls, department stores,
25          amusement parts, even hospitals. That's right -- hospitals.

In 2002 a few Americans got fed up with being overweight and did what we do best: They sued the bastards. A lawsuit was filed in New York on behalf of two teenage girls, one who was 14 years old, 4' 10", and  170 pounds, the other,  19  years old, 5' 6", and  270 pounds.

30         Lawyers for McDonald's called the suits frivolous, stating that the dangers of its
food are universally known and that these kids can't show that their weight and
health problems were caused solely by their Mcdiets.

Are the food companies solely to blame for this epidemic?
Where does personal responsibility stop and corporate responsibility begin?
35           Is fast food really that bad for you?
